Urea carries more nitrogen than any other solid fertiliser, 46 percent of its own weight, which is why a single product feeds a large share of the world's crops. Yet the same molecule reaches the buyer in two very different shapes, and the choice between them decides how it spreads, how it stores, and what it costs to land.
Urea is made by reacting ammonia with carbon dioxide under pressure. The output is a hot, molten stream that has to be turned into a solid a farmer or a blender can actually handle. Two routes do that job, and they give the same 46-0-0 analysis a different physical body.
Prilling sprays the melt from the top of a tall tower and lets the droplets harden as they fall through rising air. Granulation instead builds each particle up in layers inside a rotating drum or a fluidised bed. Same nitrogen on the label, two production philosophies, and a real difference in the pellet that comes out the other end.
Prills are small, roughly 1 to 2 millimetres, and relatively soft. They dissolve quickly, carry low biuret when the plant is well run, and cost less to produce, which keeps them popular across South Asia and parts of Africa. Granules are larger, 2 to 4 millimetres, and much harder, with crush strengths that survive long sea voyages and repeated handling. That hardness is why granular urea dominates bulk blends and mechanical spreading.
The practical differences a buyer weighs up come down to a short list:

Not every tonne goes to a farm. Technical-grade urea, made to tighter purity, feeds a growing industrial slate. The fastest-growing outlet is diesel exhaust fluid, sold as AdBlue or DEF, a 32.5 percent urea solution that strips nitrogen oxides out of truck exhaust through selective catalytic reduction. Tighter emissions rules in Europe, China, and India have turned that into a structural demand story rather than a niche.
Urea also feeds melamine and resin production and works as a protein supplement in cattle feed. Each of these markets pays for consistency, which is why technical grades command a premium over standard fertiliser prills.
We move urea in bulk and in 50 kilogram bags, prilled or granular, on FOB and CIF terms with SGS inspection at the load port. Because urea is hygroscopic, it draws moisture straight out of the air, so packaging, anti-caking treatment, and a dry hold matter as much as the analysis on the certificate. A cargo that arrives caked into a single block is worth far less than the same nitrogen delivered free-flowing.
